Local Seed Harvesting & Speciality Growing for Native Trees

At Restore Native, we believe in a hands-on approach to forest restoration. From seed collection to planting and ongoing maintenance, we take care of every step to ensure your native trees thrive. One of the key stages in this process is local seed harvesting, which plays a crucial role in producing healthy, resilient plants that are perfectly suited to your environment.

Why Local Seed Harvesting Matters

When it comes to growing native plants, the quality of the seed is paramount. We are committed to sourcing seeds from strong, healthy wild stock to ensure the best possible outcomes for our plants. By collecting locally sourced seeds, we ensure that the plants we grow are adapted to the local conditions, helping them flourish in their new homes.

In the Waikato, we’re out in the field every autumn, gathering seeds from species like Karamu (Coprosma robusta) and other native plants. Karamu is a perfect example of a strong, healthy specimen we want to collect from – not only does it produce beautiful fruit, but it thrives in our local climate and ecosystem.

The Specialty Growing Process

Once the seeds are collected, we bring them to our nursery where we carefully grow them into strong, healthy plants. This process takes time – it may be a couple of years before they’re ready to be planted out, but the wait is worth it. With expertise in specialty growing, we ensure that each tree is nurtured through every stage of its development.

We understand that every project is different, which is why we offer customized growing solutions. Whether you’re looking for specific native species, or you have unique environmental requirements, we can provide tailored solutions to suit your needs.

A Full-Service Approach

We also offer more than just plants – we offer a full-service solution that covers every aspect of the restoration process. From seed collection and growing to planting and ongoing maintenance, we’re here to help you create beautiful, thriving native forests.
