The Art of Plant Density – Creating Thriving Native Forests

When planning a successful native revegetation project, one of the key factors to consider is plant density. By getting the spacing right, you set the foundation for a thriving forest that can grow harmoniously, suppress weeds, and withstand the elements.

Why Plant Density Matters

  1. Canopy Formation: Close planting ensures trees grow together, forming a canopy faster. This canopy not only supports the trees but also blocks sunlight, reducing weed growth.

  2. Protection from Elements: Trees planted at optimal density shelter each other, minimizing exposure to wind and harsh weather.

  3. Diversity and Growth: Tight spacing allows smaller, long-lived trees to grow up in the shade and protection of pioneer species.

Spacing for Success
In a recent project at Restore Native, we planted Lemonwood and Wineberry at 1.5-meter spacings. Three to four years later, these trees are thriving, growing tightly together and starting to form a lush, protective canopy.

If we had spaced them further apart—say, two to 2.5 meters—the trees would still be exposed, growing slower, and leaving gaps for invasive weeds like blackberry to establish.

Down below the canopy, a young Tītokī planted just 12 months ago is now sheltered and ready to grow tall, benefiting from the shade and protection provided by the surrounding trees.

Executing the Perfect Plan
A successful revegetation project involves more than just planting trees:

  • Planning for Diversity: Include a mix of fast-growing pioneers and slower, long-lived species.

  • Getting Spacing Right: Tailor spacing to the site and tree species to encourage canopy closure as quickly as possible.

  • Ongoing Maintenance: Keep an eye on weed control and monitor tree health during the first few years.

The Result? A Thriving Native Forest
When plant density is planned and executed well, the results speak for themselves. The combination of diverse species, thoughtful spacing, and good maintenance leads to lush, thriving native forests that restore the land and support local biodiversity.
