Wineberry (Makomako)
Description
Wineberry (Aristotelia serrata), or makomako, is a rapid-growing native that’s perfect for kickstarting forest regeneration. With its lush foliage, bird-attracting berries, and stunning red-tinged new growth, it’s a standout in any restoration project and super important for biodiversity.
Fast & Hardy: Quickly establishes to provide shelter for slower-growing natives.
Bird Magnet: Tasty berries attract kererū and other native birds, boosting biodiversity.
Soil Stabilizer: Enjoys being in medium to damp soil and helps control erosion, making it great for riparian and reforestation projects.
How to Use It
- Ideal for early-stage restoration, filling gaps and providing fast canopy cover.
- Pai with the restoration 'Forward Pack' (karamu, mānuka, kānuka, cabbage tree kohuhu and akeake) for a fast-growing, biodiverse mix.
- Low-maintenance— can be a little fiddly to establish, so we recommend releasing in the Spring (maybe again in the Summer depending on weed growth), then let them thrive.
Wineberry is a restoration all-star, offering quick growth, food for wildlife, and a splash of color. Plant it and let the birds bring the forest back to life!
